Heaviness in modern metal music. A production-technological approach to a genre specific quality criterion
In this workshop, the aesthetic quality criteria in modern metal music are explored. As "heaviness" and "intelligibility" provide the powerful effect required in the metal genre, the potential of musical heaviness at the levels of composition, performance and production as well as their interplay will be questioned first. Selected empirical studies from the perspectives of music history and psychology complement the discussion. A brief overview of conventions in current metal music productions follows, which gives the students the opportunity to acquire their own practical experiences in mixing a metal track. Finally, the productions will be compared followed by discussions of consequences for their own musical practice and possible research projects.
