Music between Inter- and Transculturality

Music is one important aspect of culture. Even though this statement is likely to be undisputed, it still is complex in the age of globalisation, digitalisation and migration. Johann Gottfried Herder’s definition of cultures as homogenous societies has been declared obsolete in most current academic debates. More contemporary are intercultural or even transcultural concepts of culture.

This seminar is basically rooted in ethnomusicology. We will explore the music of the world with its sociocultural, medial and technological facets, and discuss cultural theories. Thus, one main aim is exploring idiomatic as well as intercultural/transcultural characteristics of music from all over the world. Besides concentrating on the musical cultures, practical experiences with the music will be of high importance.
